The Showtrax International Recycling and Energy Conservation Programme

Showtrax International have always been very aware of the perception that Motor Racing is ‘not very good’ for the world’s conservation! However, as a company, we are very pro-active in not only recycling materials that we use but also have spent many thousands of pounds over the last few years developing new LED technology not only for the pit lane but also for commercial use.

In latter times, there has been a massive effort by the motorsport industry to introduce and develop new ‘greener’ fuels, racecars and operational vehicles. All of these exciting innovations are now starting to find their way into everyday motoring and the ‘general public’ are really starting to benefit from what Motorsport has brought to the new world.

Showtrax International have established a programme to cut overall Energy Consumption by 30% over the next two years. Likewise the company policy is to cut waste by 80% by recycling. This includes working with schools and other community projects to recycle in tandem.

The company will also actively promote our Green Impact Activity to other companies within motorsport and establish lines of communication to encourage the thoughtful use of energy and materials.

Lighting

Having spent a huge amount of money researching and developing the LED’s for our electronic timing board, Showtrax International took the initiative two years ago when moving in to their new premises to replace all the lighting in the offices, the graphics studios and production areas with their own designed and built LED units. With over 6000 sq. feet of operational space, this meant a very large installation. However, the results have been fantastic and the electricity lighting bill was immediately reduced by 86%! Our lighting bill is now less than a large domestic house.

Not prepared to sit still, Showtrax will very shortly be updating all of their lighting again with some of the very latest LED’s to come onto the market.

Manufacturing/Conversion

The majority of conversion that Showtrax is involved with, uses aluminium and foamboard. Wastage, used to be a major problem and a very costly one for the company.

Since 2009, the company has built its own stillages where it collects all of this waste material and has arrangements in place for the recycling of the foamboard and the sale of scrap aluminium. This one simple process saved the company almost £5000 per year.

Offices

In the summer of 2011, Showtrax stopped putting all manner of rubbish into the closed skip kept at the company and instead contracted a recycling company to supply bins and bags that separates out plastic, cans, glass, paper and cardboard. The cost savings already are having an affect with the closed skip now only being emptied once every two months instead of once a week.

Graphics

One of the biggest areas of waste is always in the graphic department where we are using rolls and rolls of self adhesive vinyl. Once the backing paper is taken away from the vinyl, this is all waste and going through, on average, 10 rolls of 1.6m x 50m vinyl a week, generates a huge amount of wastage. Initially, using a recycling company to take this away was the answer, but now through a new initiative, we are able to help the community in a very positive way.

The graphics department also generates a huge number of used commercial ink cartridges. Working with the manufacturer, Showtrax have now negotiated free unused cartridges in return for recycling the used ones.

Schools Programme

Showtrax International have pilotted an initiative scheme with Scott Lower School, Bedford.

Scott Lower, like many other schools, have found it increasingly difficult in the past few years to keep providing all the resources that the early learning years demand. By now giving the large rolls of backing paper from the graphics studio to the school, this has been one of the most fantastic projects yet. To see the children being able to use this paper in many creative ways is extremely fulfilling. The school is also playing its part in recycling, so when they have finished with the materials, they are then being recycled again. (Third Generation!)

Likewise, the school is now taking much of our waste foamboard. This is then being used to make all sorts of things such as signage around the school and Christmas decorations.

Providing the scheme works well, it is our intention to expand this to other schools in 2012.

University Partnership

Showtrax International has recently teamed up with Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. We have agreed to pilot a University scheme called the Green Impact Awards.

Showtrax are working with selected third year International Business Strategy students to help change and develop the attitudes and methods of recycling and energy conservation within the offices and workshop. By implementing this scheme at Showtrax, it is a step towards gaining bigger environmental accreditations and creating partnerships with local academic institutes.

Summary

We at Showtrax International take the Green Issues very seriously and already have significantly reduced our carbon footprint. We will continue to attempt to recycle everything that is manufactured or converted within our company.
